About the Crypto 💬

When Wall Street banker Martin Duran (Beau Knapp) is sent to a bank branch in upstate New York, he uncovers suspicious cash flow through a local gallery selling million-dollar paintings. As Marty traces links to a violent global mob, he realizes he's put his nearby family in grave danger.

  • DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

I love the moment in film when the mundane morphs suddenly into menace - when people who believe they fit into their worlds suddenly, sometimes violently - no longer do. In Bad Day at Black Rock, Spencer Tracy's character, clad in a stark black suit, is an impossible anachronism, visually out of place in the vast emptiness of the American West. He arrives with a single-minded purpose, but gets dragged into the violence and mystery that lies just beneath the surface of the sleepy, forgotten town.

In CRYPTO, we wanted to recreate that type of cinematic anxiety and I was also influenced by the tension and visual style of both David Lynch on one end of the spectrum and David Fincher on the other. Transecting a dark and winding road between the two towering Davids. While in prep, I also screened films for our cinematographer Pieter Vermeer like Robin Pront's D'Ardennes, about a violent brother's return from prison, and the biblical conflict that ensues. We watched Xavier Dolan's Tom at The Farm, a 16-millimeter slow burn from the wunderkind filmmaker about a young man from the city confronting a complex past at a rural farm setting, with some incredibly tense and dread-filled sequences. We also reexamined Jeremy Saulnier's Blue Ruin, a revenge noir that upends conventions by having its protagonist achieve his deadly mission in the first act of the film. I love its observational quality, its proscenium POV, and the complex performances.

When we rewatched Kevin Phillips's beautiful Super Dark Times - due to it having also been shot in Kingston, NY (where we shot CRYPTO) - I recognized several locations we were exploring during our scout, but soon realized its darker thematic qualities resonated with us. In the end, we jettisoned anything consciously referential and focused on serving the intricate story and crafting a tense, satisfying neo-noir thriller for the audience. We hope you enjoy the results.
