About the Puzzle 💬

  • Everyone must find their missing piece.

Agnes (Kelly Macdonald) has been a devoted housewife for decades, living a quietly sheltered life in suburban Connecticut. When she's gifted a thousand-piece puzzle for her birthday, Agnes finally discovers something she's passionate about and unusually skilled at. Her hobby gradually evolves into a quest for self-awareness and leads her to team up with Robert (Irrfan Khan), a fellow maverick who introduces her to an unexpected world of puzzle competitions.

''Life is random, but when you finish a puzzle you know you've made all the right choices.''

Irrfan Khan as Robert

Agnes is soon swapping household chores for secretive train rides to New York City, where Robert helps her unlock a desire to finally march to the beat of her own drum for the first time in her life. Ultimately, Agnes will decide for herself what comes next.

  • ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

PUZZLE is adapted from the Argentine film Rompecabezas (2009), writer/director Natalia Smirnoff's debut film set in Buenos Aires. Producer Stodel, a former acquisitions executive, had long experience identifying foreign films that could click with American audiences; he was charmed by the idea of jigsaw puzzles as an unlikely instrument of self-discovery and saw in Rompecabezas a strong candidate for an English-language adaptation.

PUZZLE is the directorial debut of longtime producer Marc Turtletaub.

  • PUZZLE FACTS

John Spilsbury is credited as the inventor of the jigsaw puzzle. In the 1760s he pasted a map of the world to a wooden board and cut out individual countries to be put back together. Since each puzzle was made individually by hand, the activity started off as one that only the upper-class could afford.

In the early 1900s, Parker Brothers introduced puzzles to their line of games. First, Parker Brothers introduced figure pieces into its Pastime brand puzzles. Figure pieces made puzzles a bit easier to assemble. Second, Pastimes and other brands moved to an interlocking style that reduced the risk of spilling or losing pieces.

In the 1930s new processes were created for faster, less expensive puzzles. Die-cuts were created that cut cardboard pieces which drastically lowered the costs, allowing more families to participate in the pastime.

The world's largest jigsaw puzzle consisted of 551,232 pieces. It took over 17 hours to put together by 1,600 individuals.

In 2005, the most expensive puzzle was sold at an auction. A Pennsylvanian woman purchased a 467-piece puzzle for a total of $27,000.

Doing jigsaw puzzles is one of the activities that can help keep the brain active and may contribute to reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Jigsaw puzzles that say they have 1,000 pieces have approximately 1,000 pieces, but probably not exactly 1,000 - most come out to about 1,025.

A 'whimsy' is a special puzzle piece cut into recognizable shapes such as a car or butterfly. Often designed to match the jigsaws theme, whimsies add a fun and playful twist.

Although they are not officially documented and often small, most cities have jigsaw puzzle clubs where one can join for group puzzling, as well as puzzle swaps. This keeps your collection ever-growing and a great way to meet other jigsaw enthusiasts. According to a recent search on MeetUp, the cities with the most members in a puzzle club are Garland, TX, (approx. 400 members) Santa Clara, CA (approx. 50 members), and West Palm Beach, FL (approx. 50 members).

The Saint Paul's Winter Carnival is the largest puzzle competition in the USA. In 2018, the event took place in late January, and had over 300 entrants. The winning team put together a 500-piece puzzle in 38 minutes and 25 seconds.
