About the Metalhead 💬

Icelandic director Ragnar Bragason's intense, heavy metal-fueled drama of loss, faith, redemption, Megadeth and Judas Priest.

On a remote farm in Iceland, a girl grows up in the shadow of a family tragedy and dreams of becoming a rock star.

  • Until the light takes us.

It's the year 1970 and as Black Sabbath record their first album and mark the birth of Heavy Metal, Hera Karlsdottir (Thora Bjorg Helga) is born on the cowshed floor at her parents' farm in rural Iceland. The years of her youth are carefree until a tragedy strikes.

As a 12-year-old, Hera witnessed the tragic farming accident that killed her older, beloved brother and she blames herself for his death. But it is as if the heavy metal loving Baldur (Óskar Logi Ágústsson) never left her, as Hera takes on her brother's identity, claiming his wardrobe, record collection and electric guitar.

  • In her grieve, Hera finds solace in the dark music of Heavy Metal and dreams of becoming a rock star.

As the years pass on the farm buried under a shroud of snow and a looming ominous mountain Hera practices her guitar and dreams of forming a band. Hera is a rebellious, misunderstood delinquent in her early twenties who can't help but get into trouble. She dreams of escaping out into the world but somehow always ends up at her own doorstep.

When her childhood friend returns intent on marrying her and a young priest moves to the farming community the wheels of fate start turning. Hera has to grow up, find her own voice and realize she can't run away her whole life...

Partly inspired by the Norwegian black metal church burnings in the early 1990s, METALHEAD features a soundtrack of 1980s and 1990's headbanging classics by Riot, Teaze, Savatage, Lizzy Borden, and Megadeth.

One of the brightest figures in the Icelandic film scene, Ragnar Bragason describes his tale as being about ''a girl, heavy metal and cows. METALHEAD is a dramatic film, both tender and grim with moments of rebellious comedy. It's a story of a terrible loss and how we deal with our griefs, about community and a sense of family, dreams and nightmares.'' A tribute to heavy metal, this equally funny and emotional film follows a girl who grows up on a remote farm who dreams of becoming a rock star.

''I bought my first metal album when I was like 10 turning 11, it was Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast. And the reason is I saw one song on a TV show in Iceland and I'd never heard anything like it. So that's kind of where it started. I spent most of my teenage years collecting heavy metal albums and listening to lots of metal and buying all the metal magazines I could find. Even though the film is in Icelandic and takes place in Iceland I think it's kind of universal, it has this core element of family and everybody has a family.''
