About the Galveston 💬

Based on the novel by Nic Pizzolatto, writer of HBO's True Detective, comes a noirish crime thriller.

After surviving a setup by his criminal boss, a hitman rescues a young prostitute and flees with her to Galveston, Texas, where the two find strength in each other as dangerous pursuers and the shadows of their pasts follow close behind...

  • Hell is real.

New Orleans, 1988. 40-year-old Roy Cady (Ben Foster) is a heavy-drinking criminal enforcer and mob hit man whose boss, Stan (Beau Bridges), a New Orleans mobster, sets up Roy in a double-cross scheme to have him killed on the very day that Roy receives news that he has lung cancer. Roy anticipates Stan's plan, however, and ends up killing off the hit men before they can complete their job. In the bloody aftermath, Roy discovers 19-year-old Raquel ''Rocky'' Arceneaux (Elle Fanning), a teenage hooker on the scene, who he takes with him, saving her from imminent peril at the hands of Stan and his goons.

Rocky is too young, too tough, too sexy - and far too much trouble... Like the smoke dancing upwards from a barrel of a gun, there's no way things are going to end well.

Roy and Rocky look to escape pursuit by holing up in Galveston, Texas, a place that Roy knows from his mysterious past. On the way, Rocky convinces Roy to make a stop, and they end up with Rocky's 3-year-old daughter, Tiffany, who she retrieves from her stepfather at gunpoint.

Living for a time in a run-down motel occupied by guests of questionable motive, the trio form a bond unlike any Roy and Rocky have experienced before. Roy needs to find a way to close the book on Stan, while at the same time aiming to provide the seeds of a hopeful future for Rocky and Tiffany. But dangers from Roy and Rocky's past are closer than Roy knows, threatening any glimpse of salvation.

Mélanie Laurent directs this incandescent vision of lost souls and redemption. Beautiful in its honesty; GALVESTON is an elegy to the broken and the damned.

When I was first approached to make GALVESTON, I loved that it was such an American story. I was intrigued by the idea of making it as a European filmmaker. Making an American movie in a French style felt like a meeting of two cultures and was an opportunity I really relished. It was a dream to work with Ben Foster and Elle Fanning. They are two precious souls who brought so much intensity and emotion to the film, and were more involved in the production than any actor I had previously worked with. Before shooting, I sat down with Ben and talked through every detail of his character so he really ''got it'' going into production. Elle relied more on instinct and we had more conversations on set about her character and what she was feeling at any given moment. I loved how differently they both approached their work.

GALVESTON is a genre movie - a very distinctly American genre: at its core a character-driven road film.

It is a story that maybe wasn't meant for me but that I was able to make my own only through the trust of my actors and producers. I added a European spirit and I hope the audience allows themselves to go to a serious place, sit with the emotions, and take a journey with the two main characters.

I am often asked what the difference is between acting and directing. To me, jobs are like two different loves. When you're acting, it's like meeting someone and having a great love - almost like going on vacation. But when you're directing, you're like a mother giving birth. You're obsessed and never stop thinking about the film.
